Early detection saves lives
Know the signs. Get screened. Support survivors.
A clear, compassionate resource about breast cancer — symptoms, prevention, screening, treatments, and how you can help.
What is breast cancer?
Breast cancer is a disease that occurs when abnormal cells in the breast grow uncontrollably, forming a tumor that can invade nearby tissues or spread to other parts of the body.
It typically begins in the ducts or lobules of the breast and may develop in both men and women, although it is far more common in women.
Early detection through regular screening, such as mammograms and clinical examinations, significantly improves treatment outcomes. Why awareness matters
Awareness is the first line of defense against breast cancer. When people are informed about its warning signs, risk factors, and the importance of regular screening, they are more likely to seek early medical evaluation. Early detection ensures simpler treatments, fewer complications, and a higher chance of survival.
How you can help
Raise Awareness. You can Use social media or community events to spread accurate information, debunk myths, and encourage self-exams.
Support Screening Programs. Volunteer or donate to organizations that provide free or low-cost screenings to underserved populations.
Help Patients and Survivors. Offer emotional support: listen, visit, or simply spend time with those undergoing treatment..
Common signs & symptoms
If you notice any of the below, visit a clinic. Most breast changes are not cancer, but check them early.
Lump in the Breast or Underarm
Usually painless, hard, and has irregular edges (though sometimes soft and round). Can occur in any part of the breast or armpit.
Changes in breast shape or size
One breast may suddenly look larger, smaller, or uneven.
Nipple Changes
Inversion (the nipple turns inward instead of pointing outward). Discharge that is clear, bloody, or any unusual fluid.
Prevention & healthy habits
There is no guaranteed way to prevent breast cancer, but these steps reduce risk and help early detection.
Know your body
Report new or unusual breast changes to a healthcare professional promptly.
Healthy lifestyle
Eat a balanced diet, engage in regular exercise, limit alcohol consumption, and avoid tobacco.
Screening
Mammography, clinical breast exams and self-awareness help early diagnosis.
Screening & Tests
Screening methods depend on age, risk, and local guidelines. Common methods include mammography, ultrasound and clinical breast exams.
Mammography
Mammography is an X-ray imaging technique used to detect early signs of breast cancer, often before symptoms appear. It helps identify small tumors or abnormalities that cannot be felt by touch.
Book a screening
What to expect
- Quick procedure (10–30 minutes)
- May feel uncomfortable, not usually painful
- Results in a few days
Screening for high-risk groups
Those with family history or genetic risk may require earlier or more frequent screening.
Support & resources
Breast cancer can be emotionally challenging. Patients and families are encouraged to seek counseling, join support groups, or connect with survivors who share similar experiences.
